The University of Thessaly Expands International Presence with New Branch in Athienou, Cyprus
The University of Thessaly is proud to announce a major step in its internationalization journey: the establishment of a new branch in the Municipality of Athienou, Larnaca District, Cyprus. This important initiative, officially approved by the University Senate and the Board of Governors, marks a key milestone in the University’s global outreach efforts.
Leading this strategic expansion is Professor Chrysi Laspidou, Vice-Rector for Innovation, Internationalization, Collaborations, and Digital Governance. Through her vision and dedicated efforts, the University continues to grow its global network and strengthens its role as a forward-thinking institution in higher education.
“This is a significant step toward internationalization, and we are proud of the work that has gone into making it a reality,” stated Professor Laspidou.
Professor Laspidou recently took part in a high-level delegation visit to Cyprus, alongside Rector Professor Charalampos Billinis, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Quality Assurance Professor I. Anagnostopoulos, Dean of the School of Health Sciences Professor G. Fthenakis, and Professor Emeritus D. Vavougios. During their visit, they engaged in key discussions with prominent figures, including His Beatitude Archbishop George of New Justiniana and All Cyprus, the Minister of Education Ms. Athina Michaelidou, and Athienou’s local authorities, laying the groundwork for close cooperation and long-term success.
The new branch will launch with the Department of Veterinary Medicine, marking the first public university-level veterinary program in Cyprus. This development not only promotes academic excellence but also aims to create strong links with the local community and agri-food sector, particularly relevant to both Thessaly and Athienou’s significant livestock industries.
As this exciting new chapter unfolds, the University of Thessaly remains committed to its values of innovation, collaboration, and academic excellence.
