On 9 September, Chrysi Laspidou, Vice Rector of Research, Innovation, Digital Governance and Lifelong Learning at the University of Thessaly, discussed this challenge on ERTNews Radio 105.8, in the programme Absolutely Relevant with Andreas Papastamatiou.

The conversation focused on AGRILABS, an innovative programme at the University of Thessaly, funded by the Ministry of Development, which explores how technology and scientific knowledge can support the agricultural sector.

For a region such as Thessaly, where agriculture plays a central role in the local economy and is increasingly exposed to the effects of climate change, smarter management of natural resources is particularly important. Water use is a key part of this challenge, requiring decisions that are increasingly informed by data, technology and a better understanding of crop needs.

AGRILABS brings this approach closer to practice, supporting the development and application of innovative tools for agriculture. Its work reflects a broader objective of the University of Thessaly: connecting academic research with the challenges faced by society and the productive sector.

This is also at the heart of the University’s approach to innovation. The value of research grows when scientific knowledge can be translated into solutions that are useful beyond the academic environment and contribute to more resilient and sustainable communities.

The interview offered an opportunity to discuss this work with a wider audience and to highlight the role that universities can play in supporting the agricultural transition.

In a changing climate, knowing how to use water wisely is becoming as important as having access to it. Technology can help us make that knowledge more precise and actionable.
